ON THE ELECTION OF POPE FRANCIS I
Road to Recovery, the only non-profit charity in the United States that provides direct services to victims of clergy sexual abuse, is cautiously optimistic about the election of Cardinal Jorge Mario Borgoglio as Pope Francis I. It appears that the new Pope is a company man who will continue the practices and policies of previous Popes such as John Paul II and Benedict XVI, and we hope he will resist the temptation to conduct business in the same old manner. His break with tradition already gives us some hope for change.
First, the new Pope has taken a name, Francis, following in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi who was instructed by God to “rebuild the Church.” The new Pope has a lot of rebuilding to do, especially in the area of trust. Victims of clergy sexual abuse have been unable to trust Catholic Church leadership for centuries. Perhaps Francis I will change that.
Second, the new Pope is from South America. Let us hope that he will bring a fresh approach to transparency and honesty in the spirit of the great Latin American prophets such as Archbishop Oscar Romero who lost his life because he spoke truth to power.
Third, the new Pope is a Jesuit priest, renowned for their intellectualism and progressive spirit. Let’s hope that Francis I will be a true thinker, one who reflects on what the Church needs and makes changes where necessary.
Finally, let us hope that Francis I will declare that his Papacy will reflect a preferential option for clergy sexual abuse victims and their recovery. Let us hope he will fire those who need to be fired and hire those who truly have the best interests of victims as their priority.
