Here is Tom’s covering note:

The latest version of my bibliography is attached.  There are several new entries among the books.  I am adding a new and revised version of my list of reports on sexual abuse by the clergy.  Since the last one, which is now close to 3 years old, several new reports have been added.  I was prompted to revise it when it was to be added as an appendix to the report of an audit and review of a prominent religious order of men in the U.S. conducted by outside experts.  The report of this review will be included in a future dissemination of the bibliography.  This particular venture is important and historic because the religious community is the first ecclesiastical entity in the U.S. and probably the world to commission a thorough review of its files and practices without filtering the data provided or limiting the areas of investigation.  Unlike the expensive and semi-meaningless audits the bishops use to pat themselves on the backs with, this one will be real.

I’d like to comment briefly on four of the new books included, two older ones and one article:

BOYS OF THE CLOTH by Vincent Miles.  I believe I mentioned this once before because its not exactly new but I want to give it another push because it provides two things:  a precise and accurate review of the latest John Jay study, “Causes and Context,” and it provides the best description of the impact of minor seminaries on the sexual  maturation of priests.

MORTAL SINS by Michael D’Antonio.  This book is an outstanding, accurate and infuriating overall view of the clergy sexual abuse phenomenon in the U.S.  The author describes the origins, development, obstacles and goals of what is sometimes described as a “movement”.   I have read every book that has been written on this subject…after all I’ve been in it for almost 30 years so I’ve had time…and I believe MORTAL SINS is the most accurate, readable and up-to-date description of the whole picture that I have seen.

Scicluna, Charles.  TOWARD HEALING AND RENEWAL.  This is the published collection of the talks given at the symposium sponsored by the Gregorian University in Rome in February 2012 for selected bishops from around the world.  I was in Rome at the time and attended the public “penance” service.  I also managed to get all of the papers which I read last year.  Surprisingly it was a good symposium.  Several of the talks were excellent: Rossetti’s was quite good as was Cardinal Marx’s.  The best was given by a layman, Michael Bemi of Virtus — “The True Cost of the Crisis.”  The best in my opinion was the opener by Marie Collins.  If you’ve never met Marie you should.  She is a heroic survivor from Dublin whose impact and courage has helped change Irish history.  The problem with the symposium is not the content but the hopes it gave to many who expected follow-up that simply was not there.

J. Paul Lennon.  FR. MARCIAL MACIEL, PEDOPHILE, PSYCHOPATH, AND LEGION OF CHRIST FOUNDER.  The whole Maciel/Legion of Christ story is more than just a story…its an historic phenomenon in Catholic history and culture.  Jason Berry has written the definitive story in VOWS OF SILENCE.  Paul Lennon’s book however, is vitally important because it tells the story of the “debate” for lack of a better word, between the author, a former member of the Legion, and the late Fr. John Richard Neuhaus, icon of Catholic conservatives and founder of the magazine First Things.  Neuhaus came to Maciel’s defense and, in many of his writings pronounced him innocent and pronounced the accusers as anti a number of things.  The book contains Neuhaus’ writings on the matter which, when placed in context, are nothing more than fancy rhetoric based on a subjective opinion of events and facts about which he knew little.  In one of his epistles he settled the issue, so he thought, by proclaiming that he had reached “moral certitude” of Maciel’s innocence.  The problem was/is that he misunderstood and therefore misapplied the concept of moral certitude which is a precise canonical term.  Lennon on the other hand was there so he has first hand information yet Neuhaus dismissed this in an arrogant and empty manner.  The late Fr. N. practiced what my late father used to refer to as “irish logic”  (and he was Irish!):  “Its so because I said it and I said it because its so.”

Tom Inglis, MORAL MONOPOLY and John Cooney, JOHN CHARLES MCQUAID: RULER OF CATHOLIC IRELAND.  I just returned from a conference in Dublin where I was reminded again of the profound hold the institutional Catholic Church has had on Ireland and the re-alignment of the relationship between the Church and the Irish people in recent years.  These two books helped me understand the role of the Church….moving from the surface relationships and actions to the very depth of the complex and in some ways toxic bond between the two.

I want to recommend two excellent articles by Dr. Margaret Kennedy, Ph.D., one of the founders of the international “movement” searching for justice for victims of clergy abuse.  Margaret and I were together in Dublin and seeing her again reminded me of the role she has played especially in drawning much needed attention to the abuse of adult women and the abuse of the disabled.  I first was in contact with Margaret way back in 1991 and met her in 1992.  She’s been a staunch defender of the victims, being one herself, since the beginning of it all.

4 Responses to “From Tom Doyle: CLERGY SEXUAL ABUSE ABBREVIATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SELECTED SOURCES RELATED TO CLERGY SEXUAL ABUSE, ECCLESIASTICAL POLITICS, THEOLOGY AND CHURCH HISTORY, By Thomas P. Doyle, Revised May 8, 2013”

  1. ERW Says:

We all are beholden to this dedicated man, who has exerted his energy, time and talent to help erradicate these unspeakable crimes against humanity. A true role model and undeclared saint!

  2. Thomas Says:

Yes…and why doesn’t Francis tap him as an ally and a resource? Don’t hide from the truth…hear it out in all of its demoralizing resonance—hear it, and then act on it. Without action, there can never be healing. Like the nuns…hear them out, and then act on it—dissolve the Inquisition, provide the restitution for all of the harm that it may ever have caused. The Church belongs to everyone…it was meant to be given away…

  3. Frank Lostaunau Says:

Tom Doyle, Richard Sipe, and Patrick Wall will not be tapped by Pope Francis because he doesn’t want to solve the actual problems destroying the RCC. Francis is still in his honeymoon period.
Sooner or later, somebody will take a shot at him and he’ll wake up for awhile…unfortunately, he will likely go back to sleep and move about in a stupor.

    fuck pope francis…

    signed,

    anony
